Dr. Bernard Jensen wrote in Tissue Cleansing through Bowel Management:
"It is an indisputable fact that not only illness and old age, but even death are due to the accumulation of waste products of body chemistry...Therefore, immunity and freedom from disease can be had and old age and death can be deferred only as long as body wastes are kept at a minimum."

Dr. John R. Christopher, the father of herbal medicine in the United States, wrote:
"It is a known fact that well over ninety percent of all sickness
and disease in the human body is caused by a congested (constipated) colon area."

How does the healthy colon work?

The colon, also known as the large intestine, is the last 5-6 feet of the digestive system followed by the last 5 or 6 inches which is the rectum. After food is digested, waste moves through the colon, then through the rectum and out the anus. The primary function of the colon is to absorb all of the excess water from the intestinal contents and use it to make the stool solid so that it may flush it to the rectum and out the anus. This cannot work if the colon has become clogged and toxic--which is the case with most adult Americans and increasing numbers of children as well.

What happens when the colon becomes toxic? A sticky, slimy mucus forms on the inner walls which becomes a perfect place for bacteria and parasites to grow. These parasites live off the nutrients that your body requires and cause This also houses pollutants, chemicals, and dead cells. This can go on for years without you noticing, but the effects are cumulative and eventually you may end up with problems.

The colon or large intestine produces no digestive enzymes. It does secrete mucus to help the digested food along and hold the fecal material together. It also plays a role in protecting the walls of the large intestine from bacterial activity and neutralizes some of the fecal acids. Between 1/3-1 quart of water, electrolytes, and some vitamins, are absorbed daily through the colon. If colon bacteria are normal, vitamins B-1, B-2, B-12 and K are produced by them, and all with the possible exception of B-12 are absorbed and used by the body traveling first to the liver via the portal circulation.
